From Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body:

Pg. 38:

"I used to think that Christ was wrong, impossibly hard, when he said that to imagine committing adultery was just as bad as doing it.  But now, standing here in this familiar unviolated space, I have already altered my world and Jacqueline's world for ever.  She doesn't know this yet. She doesn't know that there is today a revision of the map.  That the territory she thought was her has been annexed.  You never give away your heart; you lend it from time to time.  If it were not so how could we take it back without asking?"

Pg. 51:

"In the heat of her hands I thought, This is the campfire that mocks the sun. This place will warm me, feed me and care for me.  I will hold on to this pulse against other rhythms.  The world will come and go in the tide of a day but here is her hand with my future in its palm."

Interesting, how we can "alter our world" just by thinking something - not just adultery, but anything.

How might we alter our world by thinking what it would be like to..."whatever". Really radical thinking. (I like.)

Jeannette Winterson is one of my most beloved authors. This book is what got me hooked forever. The music of her language, her skill and artistry in weaving a tale of beauty, heartbreak, magic and realism. sigh

Thank you for posting these quotes. You've inspired me to re-read a great treasure.
