*cracks knuckles*

Friends, lurkers, and any random people who happen to see this, if you feel like it, tell me what made you smile this week.  The reason is the same as it's always been here:  I think it is far too easy to get caught up in the stresses, big and small, that we all experience.   Being able to focus on one positive thing, however small, can give one a valuable sense of perspective.

For me, I've got a big ol' smile on because of fandom.  I love it all -- the wank, the unnecessary characterization of people as "good fans" or "bad fans," the fic, the art, the meta, the het, the slash, the outrage, and the squee.  The goddamn, motherfucking passion.   Love it.

There's a place for all of us crazies, and its name is fandom.   *pets*

Then I'm thrilled. :)

So tipsy's out! Have fun, and try not to hurt yourself. *g* Sorry, I couldn't resist. I poke fun only because I manage to inflict minor damage upon myself with alarming frequency.

Stressed at work, dissapointed to death with a show... what else do I have?

Yesterday I met my niece in the street with her stuffed Pocoyó in her hands. She told me he won't let her sleep because he's crying all night. Just trying to fool us because she never lets anyone sleep. ;)

May I say I loved the vegetable soup I just made and had for dinner? Simple pleasures after a hard work day make my day.

The fandom will save all of us.

Hugs.

Not much smiling this week but I made an effort for you.

Me: So who can name any of the plays Shakespeare wrote?
Year 8 student: Robin Hood?

I laughed later.

I come to expect such things these days. I haven't mentioned the Joan of Arc suggestion that came later. He he he he. Ah the youth of today. Was it Wilde who said youth is wasted on the young?

I'm smiling because:

1. now that the Bones finale is over, perhaps we can all relax, read/write some fanfic, and things will be cooler and better in the Fall.

2. I've posted all the final grades and ASAP I finish the annual report, I'll be finished for the academic year.

3. The husband and I have been having such fun discussions about the season's finale of Bones, and the B/B. It led me to reading The Husband a couple of pages of a book I've been reading by the Dalai Lama. (and isn't that neat?)

4. I thought to make a stew last night, and do not have to cook today. :-)

5. Fandom - the whole online variation from pissed off to happy, from X-Files to BtVS, AtS, Bones and BL.

Well, on the downside, I had surgery yesterday, but I got to spend today at home recovering which was sort of fun -- felt a little like playing hooky. And I went to a bookstore with my mom to get out of the house.

Smiling kind of wryly at myself today for staying up the whole of last night 'cause I got completely caught up in the writings of a ff author I'd just 'discovered'! Completely amazed that I managed to make it through work today :S

I hope I got it right this time! ARRRGH!

Your What Would Happen If We Kissed fic is making me smile. I just finished chapter 9, so I hope you post more after 11 soon! It's fun! :-)

Let's see...

Wind Symphony rehearsal and all the fellowship I experience there made me smile.

The fact that I heard back within the hour from Trillian's customer service, even though I don't have the Pro version, made me smile.

[livejournal.com profile] sevendeadlyfun's comment on not having the New Kids on the Block new song on her iTunes made me smile.

The ongoing discussion in Simply David Only (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/simply-david-only) continues to make me smile.

The fact that I'm going to a fan media convention all weekend this long holiday weekend has had me smiling for the last 2 weeks!

That definitely made me smile, because it is oh so true!

And, appropriately, my biggest smile of the day was fandom related. [livejournal.com profile] goldpiece and I were discussing an idea for the next chapter in one of our long-neglected stories and... Well, let's just say that said idea brought on full-out laughter. The kind of laughter that causes the rest of the people in the work breakroom to look at you funny because they can't figure out why you're laughing. *shrugs* And, I certainly wasn't going to try to explain the idea to the uninitiated. It would've made me blush. ;)

Started rotations this week at CVS, which because I have zero retail experience up to now is not what made me smile, but this did: after being sorely disappointed with TPITH yesterday, what song starts playing on the PA system when I come in? That's right, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Needless to say, it brought me back to a happier time. Dorky, I know. :op

Neither did he till last weekend! We only found out that he had it on Friday so it's been a week full of family angst. He's not quite out of the woods just yet, but it's looking good so everyone's hugely relieved. :D

And I agree with your smile about the joys of fandom. The violence of the reaction to the finale made me laugh a few times. :)

BTW, I just realized I'm a dope; that was supposed to read "undergoing surgery for cancer," not "undergoing cancer." :D Plz 2 be eXcuZing my idiocy.

What a crazy week it must have been for you and yours. Life is like that -- you'll be plodding along and then BAM -- something totally unexpected and/or scary happens. Hang in there.

And I agree with your smile about the joys of fandom. The violence of the reaction to the finale made me laugh a few times. :)

Me too. :) I didn't expect them to tie up everything in the finale, but I did think there were some huge plot holes and characterization issues that required massive suspension of disbelief to accept. But I absolutely love how passionate people are about fictional realities. It speaks to the power of art and entertainment.

It really doesn't bother me that people have different opinions about this episode or the show in general. But it squicks me when people try to say that you're not a fan if you have any criticisms of the show. To me, that's like saying that you don't really love your family and friends if you disagree with any of their actions or are irritated by any of their quirks. Not that TV shows and family are the same thing, of course. It just seems utterly nonsensical to me that some people equate being a fan with blind, unquestioning adoration. I can love something and still see its faults.

Sorry for rambling. *g*

I hope your grandfather's recovery goes as smoothly as possible. *hugs*

Blanx, I fillz dem. :)

I completely agree. It wasn't till I found my way onto lj that I realised people would respond en masse with such strong feelings for a TV show. I mean, it's great, but a little weird when you step back and think about what these reactions are aimed at. :) (Not that I'll be changing my passionate responses to TV anytime in the near future.)

It just seems utterly nonsensical to me that some people equate being a fan with blind, unquestioning adoration.
Also totally agree with this. I can't count the number of times I've read about show-runners/actors/writers/whatever talking about keeping the fans happy, or seeing the fans' reaction to x, y, z, or discussing what the fans like or didn't like. It seems accepted (and logical) that fans' opinions can vary, so I don't understand why some people think that fans must love every aspect of the show. Discerning opinions = good thing. :)

Sorry for rambling. *g*
Ahem, ditto. *g* Thank you also for the hugs. *hugs back*

i haven't smiled very much since monday night. tonight i pulled up into my driveway and there was my hubby trying to shoo away two bunnies eating the clover in our yard. they wouldn't budge. when i asked him what he was doing, he said he needed to cut the yard and didn't want to hurt the bunny rabbits. he's such a big lug. after laughing so hard my stomach hurt (which actually felt kinda good), i said to him, "turn on the mower, i bet the noise will get them hopping." the look on his face was priceless. sure enough, he cranked up the motor and goodbye bunnies. god i love that man.
