Fantastic episode.  David Boreanaz can fucking act; his court scenes in this ep are a prime example of one reason why I feel so cheated when they have Booth clowning so much in these later seasons.  He's capable of so much more, as is everyone else on this show.

I'm not saying anything else about The Verdict in the Story right now, as I don't want to spoil anyone.

Yes, yes, yes and yes.

This episode made me ache for S1 Seeley... but a glimpse is more than I was hoping for, and I'll hang on to it.

The squints were all marvelous, too. Dare we hope for more...?

*g* I was SO wondering what you thought of this ep.

Yes, Seeley and the squints ALL hit it out of the park. Angela and Brennan were so beautiful together. I understand why people ship them, I really do. There's a lot of love and loyalty there.

Episodes like this feel bittersweet to me because they make me long for more, and I'm disappointed when the next excessively infantile moment(s) occurs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not humorless; I just HATE that they go for the cheap & easy laugh so ridiculously often. I don't want Bones to be a sitcom.

Dare we hope for more...?

Hope springs eternal... *crosses fingers*

I really think it was the best episode of the season, probably the series.

I have so many thoughts, I'll probably have to put together a post.

It was stellar. Truly.

And I know what you mean about having lots of thoughts. I suspect there will be a fair amount of meta coming out of this ep.

I so agree with you - tonight was such a showcase for all of them. Incredibly well written story with a twist I did not see coming. Very well done. The whole episode was a strong showing of them all, but Booth sitting in that witness chair, "that's a lot of heart, Bones" - oh, it rocked my night.
Can't wait to see excellent post-eps fic. . .hint hint. :)
BTW - I am a lurker reader - love your fic and your Booth/Brennan.

For the first time, David Boreanaz has succeeded in making me cry. Literal tears. His scenes in court, when he was put on the stand and Bones plan blindsided him... sheer perfection.

Emily Deschanel should get an Oscar simply for launching herself into her dad's arms and giving Booth that soul-piercing look at the end.

I still think Aliens in a Spaceship remains the best episode the show's ever done, but this was a solid resolution to the Max/Russ/Temperance story arc. What I appreciated, and continue to appreciate about this show, is that despite all the information and equipment and overall GENIUS the Squint Squad has at their disposal, the cases they work on still utlimately have to go through the justice system, and the system doesn't always work the way we think it should. Which they did here - Max did it, and everyone knows it, but nobody can prove it, not even us viewers, since all we saw was Max setting fire to Kirby's corpse. (very clever on the part of the producers, too) I'm not going to lie - a part of me wanted Max to get convicted.

Goodman was right - Brennan's learning curve is disturbingly steep.

This was an amazing episode on so many levels. It was a return to the dramatic tension that we had in earlier seasons and like you, I feel we'd been cheated out of a lot of Booth's depth of emotion.

Don't get me wrong - last week's flufferall was sorely needed in my life and I really enjoyed it. But I don't want that every week - I need a bit more emotional connection that just "aww, lookit! CUTE SQUEE THUD" (although that doesn't hurt ;)

Those court scenes? Unbelievable. And the final scene? It's amazing how much Brennan and Booth can communicate with just their eyes. So much was said in that look alone. Amazing.

This episode was made a wonderful! I adore David Boreanaz's portrayal of Booth and the depths of undercurrent he projects. It absolutely reminded me of The Man in the Morgue when you could almost physically feel the depths of feeling he had for his partner, or, of course, Aliens in a Spaceship. As much as I love fluff Booth, he is WAY underused as an actor.

I completely agree! He's an amazing actor. I feel that they don't use him to his full potential very often. Sure, I love him clowning around and goofing off, but I love him even more when he's serious and defending something that means so much to him. Toward the end, when the attorney was grilling Booth, he looked like he was about to cry...and of course I wanted to cry with him! To me, the way Booth looked at Brennan there and at the very end on the steps of the courthouse said much more than any words could.

Davie is such love. I totally agree with everyone about loving the angsty side of Booth. We know he'd do anything for her...and seeing him struggle with it, and how he couldn't look at her and betray her. Gah, so intense. David is so good in that moment. It was such a defining moment in their relationship. He was the one person she really needed to manipulate to get her father off. But he knew her heart was in the right place and it made him fall even deeper for her.

I love Booth's quieter moments...like with Wyatt last season.

I just said exactly that in [livejournal.com profile] a2zmom's LJ- that my favourite scene in the whole thing was Booth on the stand clearly unwilling to say that Bones had time to kill the guy. His eyes are so freakin' expressive. I don't mind some of the goofy stuff- but some of it makes me cringe: the soother in his mouth last week. Yuck.

*licks your icon *

DB was so amazing during that scene. I was just bowled over.

As for the goofy stuff, I like some of it, but I think it's grown excessive over the later seasons and has taken up space that could have been devoted to showing moments that allowed for greater depth of feeling. I was telling someone else that I think they (Bones) goes for the cheap and easy laugh too often. Funny's good; The Office and 30 Rock, both of which are comedies, are the other two currently-on-air shows I watch. In many ways, those are far more intelligent shows than Bones. I know I'll watch this show as long as it's on, but I also know that in some ways, I love it more for what it could be than what it actually is.

And yes, the pacifier/soother thing made me gag. Absolutely hated it. It just seemed stupid and infantile -- and not in a good way.

I haven't watched it yet (downloaded but still not watched), but I must agree with you about DB. I used to think he was a facial-expresion-less man, exactly like David Duchovny, but he surprised me when I started watching Bones. Still not surprised about Mr. Duchovny with anything. ;)

I hope I think better (as if I could) about his acting skills after watching the episode, in a few hours. I'll let you know. As for Emily, I SO love her unconditionally, so I can sound anything but objective. XDDD

^_^

that's the true truth!

I'm with you!

I was so pleasantly surprised by this episode. I've felt that this season has been for a lack of better word, somewhat weak. that they don't know where they want to go and then to see 'The Verdict in the Story' which to me just screams old school BONES to me I think i have my faith restored in our show.

And also it might not be the popular opinion but how great was it to finally see that frigging 'cocky' belt go? I've been SO over that for SO long.

I commented in your picspam briefly but I have to join in the general squeeing. Yes David is awesome when he's got decent material.

In this case less was more as you could follow his thought processes on the stand of how she had used him. He didn't resent her or feel betrayed that she had done it though, because he understands what a child/parent relationship means and it means more than a partner. I hope Temperance appreciates how he helped her to finally see that.

This comment was brought to you by the time difference which means I was at work while the squeeing was happening.

Date: 2008-05-07 01:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lerdo.livejournal.com
No worries on the time difference; I doubt my feelings on this ep will skew negative in the future. :)

Yes, Booth's thoughts during his time on the stand were illustrated rather nicely. I don't think he resented her either; I think he feared for her if she were to be charged with the murder instead and also was frightened by the image of her killing Kirby -- though he knew that she wasn't capable of that -- regardless of Sweets' testimony. He understood what she was doing and why; I don't doubt that for a second.

I hope Temperance appreciates how he helped her to finally see that.

Same here.

Excellent ep!

Didn't like the opening scene. Am curious what happened to that skeleton, though.

The B&B scene in the diner - where she's talking about hypothesis and says something like "You are the person I talk to" was good.

DB was great in the court scene - when he realized what Bones was doing. DB is a better actor than most people give him credit for.

But Hodgins asking permission from Bones? It seemed more like a Zack line than a Hodgins line.

I didn't like the opening scene either. It was weird, and Brennan's cackling at that skeleton was rather jarring. I just didn't get why the hell she was laughing maniacally; it seemed wildly out of character.

The B&B scene in the diner - where she's talking about hypothesis and says something like "You are the person I talk to" was good.

Yes. I loved that scene.

Agreed.

But Hodgins asking permission from Bones? It seemed more like a Zack line than a Hodgins line.

I can see why you think that, but I disagree. I think Hodgins is fairly loyal, plus with Brennan being Angela's best friend, and his distrust for the government and any kind of authority, I saw that as a pretty believable act for him.

Coming in a bit later than everyone (had to record the ep and watch it later).

I, too, was enamoured with last night's ep. It's been a while since I was utterly transfixed with an episode, and it felt frickin' great. When the show was over, I fell back into my chair and let out a great big wistful sigh (loud enough to get comments from the hubby).

My favourite moment was when Booth and Zach were searching Brennan's place, and she tells him that she thinks he's nice. The look he wore after that, well... *repeats wistful sigh*

Let's hope we get more strong episodes like this. This is sweeps material.

Amen sista. He really showed why he's been a star on every show he's been in. He gets it.

I re-watched after work today (Tues) and it was even better the second time around.
