I ABSOLUTELY agree that "it can be a dicey decision to bring rape into a story for a character that doesn't have that in their canon-history." I debated it, and then decided it could work, especially given that rape often is used as an intimidation or interrogation technique. Plus Brennan's reaction to the Mara Muerte leader in "Woman in the Garden" just made me go "hm..."
It helps that we've seen Brennan's open attitude toward sexuality, reinforcing her statement that things can heal.
