"In the rhythm of the needles, there is music for the soul."
--- from an old sampler

Our first ultrasound -- at 8 weeks -- was today. The technician said the baby's measuring at 8 weeks, 3 days, with an estimated due date of Feb. 22, 2009. It was kind of wiggling around, and we heard its heartbeat, which I didn't expect. I thought you could only see a heartbeat this early, not hear it. But we heard it -- 171 beats per minute. It was an unbelievable moment; I was amazed because what we heard wasn't my heartbeat -- it belonged to someone else entirely. :) DH and I are extremely relieved we made it past this first hurdle. I stuck the pics up on the fridge.

This isn't a pic I took; it's a scanned, inverted, and edited version of one of the ultrasound pics. The baby looks like an alien, a gummy bear, or maybe Charlie Brown. For now, we're referring to it as The Alien. *g*

This is my laptop and the scarf I started knitting yesterday. My mom taught me to knit when I was a kid, but then I didn't do it for years. Last summer I started teaching myself again, but then I got distracted by writing, the move, the miscarriage, etc. I don't know why I let it sit for so long; it's really quite soothing. The scarf isn't anything special -- just a simple garter stitch, and who knows how long it'll take me to finish, but I'm enjoying the click and slide of the needles. There's something rather meditative about it.
